Orthodontics for kids.

We can assess your child’s orthodontic needs as soon as they begin to develop adult teeth, usually around the age of 8. Early interceptive treatments can be used while there is a mix of baby and adult teeth, resolving orthodontic issues and preventing an issue from getting worse. Commonly used appliances include plates, expanders and partial braces.

Most orthodontic issues can be corrected with comprehensive treatment (braces or Invisalign) later on, however interceptive treatments help reduce case complexity prior to your child developing their full adult dentition. In some instances, stepping in early can also greatly reduce treatment times, as some problems are much easier to correct while the teeth and jaws are still developing.

Could your child benefit from early orthodontic treatment?

The Australian Society of Orthodontics recommends that you book in to see an orthodontist if your child has any of the following:

  • If your child’s teeth do not meet properly while biting

  • Mouth-breathing, snoring

  • Crowding of the front teeth

  • Protrusion of the front teeth

  • Biting or chewing difficulties

  • A speech impediment

  • If your child’s jaw shifts or clicks upon opening/closing

  • If your child is older than five years and still sucks a thumb or finger
